Emerald , the birthstone for May, is a variety of the mineral Beryl and is one of the most revered of all gemstones. Regarded as one of the “big four”, it sits alongside diamond, ruby and sapphire as one of the most desirable in the gemstone world.
Commercial low grade emeralds are found in abundance, whereas fine quality emeralds are extremely rare with the finest examples often commanding higher prices than equivalent sized diamonds.
Although emerald deposits are found in various localities around the world, including Brazil, Madagascar, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Russia and the African countries of Tanzania,
Zambia and Zimbabwe, Colombia is regarded as the main
source of fine emeralds. Whilst it has over 150 known
significant deposits, the Muzo and Chivor mines are famed
for producing the finest stones.
At Weares, we stock all grades and shapes from
commercial stones suitable for jobbing repairs to the
finest Columbian examples for one-off hand made pieces.
Whatever your requirement, we will have or will source
the right stone for the job. |
